The battles of Sprimont , battles of Esneux or battles of Ourthe is a battle which has occurred the 17 and September 18th 1794 on the plate located between the valleys of the Vesdre, the Ourthe and the Amblève, with a score of kilometers in the south of Liege.

Are associated with this battle the localities of Sprimont, Esneux, Fontin and the site of Redoute , whose name finds its origin in one of the fortifications of the battle.

This battle devoted the final end of the Ancien Mode on the territory of current the Belgium (primarily Austrian Netherlands, Principauté of Liege and Principauté of Stavelot-Malmedy), by the victory of the French revolutionary troops over the Austrian troops. The Austrians occupying the plate were dislodged by French troops galvanized by their recent successes. The latter underwent heavy losses however.

Course of the battle

The French, positioned on left bank of Amblève then of Ourthe of Nonceveux to Esneux, will remove following rough combat, in particular with Aywaille, and Remouchamps, the various positions of Right Bank, forcing the Austrians to fold up itself towards north (valley of Vesdre), then towards the Germany.

Many pieces of artillery will be positioned on both sides on the heights of low-Amblève.
