September 14th 1862, George McClellan of the Nordistes forces wants to cut through a path through the collar of Tunner' S Gap to drive back Lee against the Potomac. At midday, it launches two army corps under the orders of Burnside against the confederated division of D.H. Hill, supported a little later by that of Longstreet.
The battle stops with the night. The Southerners, overflowed in north by the body of Hooker, are constrained with the retirement. The victory is northerner, but the keen resistance of D.H. Hill made it possible Lee to gather its forces in preparation for the Bataille of Antietam of September 17th, 1862.
