Battle of Montereau

The battles of Montereau took place of February 18th 1814 close to Montereau. (Seine-et-Marne), and showed a victory of the French ordered by Napoleon over the Autrichiens and Wurtembergeois ordered by the royal Prince of Wurtemberg.

Context

After the disaster of the countryside of Russia and the defeat of Leipzig the armies of the coalition cross the Rhine and begin the countryside of France.
  • From February 14th to 17th 1814: The Austrian general Hardegg enters Montereau the 14. The plundering of the city starts with its procession of atrocities on the population.
  • on February 13rd, 1814: The Oudinot general gives the order to fold up himself on Nangis, and with the Pajol general to evacuate Montereau, and to fold up themselves on Melun or Nangis. The battle

An equestrian statue of Napoleon 1st, whose base comprises illustrations of the heroic load of February 18th, 1814, was set up on the bridge of Montereau, under the second empire.
