Battle of Mondovi
The battles of Mondovi took place the April 21st 1796 between the strong French Army of Bonaparte of approximately 17.500 men, against what remained troops of the Royaume of Sardinia already defeats in the preceding battles of Montenotte, Millesimo and Dego is approximately 13.000 men under the orders of the general Colli. The French gained the battle.
Context
After the preceding defeats the Austrians withdraw themselves towards the Lombardy. Instead of continuing them as it wishes it, Bonaparte receives Directoire the order to finish some with what remains Piedmontese army.
The battle
After a first clash with the troops cut off in the bastion from Ceva, the French start the continuation of the Piedmontese one, who took refuge with Mondovi.
Consequences
The winners, occupy the town of Alba, the April 26th 1796 and proclaim the République of Alba, République which had a very short life, since indeed two days later, on April 28th, with the signature of the armistice of Cherasco to the Salmatoris palate, Victor-Amédée III of Sardinia recovers Alba and keeps the control of Turin, but yields to the French the fortresses Coni, Ceva, Alexandria and Tortona, by conceding moreover the unrestricted passage of the armies of the Revolution through the Piedmont to continue the war against Austria.The victory of the Bridge of Lodi, the May 10th 1796, and the defeat of the Austrian general Johann von Beaulieu, opens the road for the conquest of Milan and the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte.
May 15th, 1796 with the peace treaty of Paris, Nice and the Savoy pass from the Royaume of Sardinia to France.
