Battle of Ellendune

The Bataille of Ellendune took place in 825, on the edges of Willy

This battle marks the end of the supremacy of Mercie on Heptarchie, and beginning of that of Wessex until the unification of England.

Beornwulf de Mercie yields the victory to its adversary Egbert de Wessex, which invades the kingdoms of Kent and Essex, adding them thereafter with its fields.

Site: Ellendune (Ellandun) is in Wroughton in Wiltshire.

Egbert de Wessex carried the title of eighth Bretwalda; it was the first, following this battle, with being titrated sovereign of all England (" ruler over all England").

The Surrey, and the Sussex were going then to be subjected to the Wessex.

It was also the end of Cantware (Kent) as a kingdom independent and a candidate of Heptarchie.
