Basilica of Sea-bream

The Notre-Dame church of the Sea-bream or the Sainte-Marie church of Daurade' is a Toulouse Basilique , which gives on the the Garonne, and is next to the building of the Art schools. It is a church without bell-tower, a little with the narrow one, and which one can better appreciate the architecture on other side of the Fleuve.

History

Its history starts in Ve century. It is built on the vestiges of a dodecagonal Temple Roman, undoubtedly dedicated to Apollon, and surmounted by a Coupole. In fact the Empereur S Romans entrust this temple to the Christian . The worship of the Vierge was initiated with Éphèse, in 431. It is perhaps one of the reasons of the construction of the church of Sea-bream, dedicated to the Virgin Mary represented in the form of a black Vierge. Indeed, known today under the name of “Basilica of Sea-bream” because of its mosaic S at gilded funds, the church is initially called “Sainte-Marie Basilica of Toulouse”. Its name comes from a mosaic in Or which it contained: " Deaurata" who wants to say covered with gold. It is integrated into the 9th century with a Monastère Benedictine. At the 11th century, the church, remained dodecagonal, is prolonged by a Romance Nef. It is attached to the Abbaye of Moissac in 1077, and the monastery is increased by a Cloître. The cupola is destroyed in 1703, whereas it missed collapsing. A dome is then posed in 1760, starting a little more solidity of the walls. In 1761, badly maintained, all the Romance church must be demolished. A reconstruction project begun in 1764 is stopped in order to allow the construction of the quays of the Garonne, downwards, and on which the plans of the basilica encroached. The new project was ambitious. It was a question of reproducing Saint-Pierre of Rome. Last nine years later, the plans were modified, and a rotation and a translation of the unit were operated. Thus, the chorus of the primitive basilica, which was built on the vestiges of the Roman temple, is used today as transept. Work was stopped by the Révolution. The church was devoted basilica by the Pape Pie IX in 1876, that is to say two years before the Basilique Saint-Sernin. It was really finished only in 1883. Today, the Sea-bream accommodates the remainders of Goudouli, the poet honoured on the Place Wilson. It is as at this place as the Académie of the floral Plays (see Clémence Isaure ) blesses each May 3rd the Fleur S intended for the prizes winner of her literary contests.

Black virgin

One of the characteristics of the Basilique of the Sea-bream to Toulouse is to shelter a black Vierge. The statue presented today is however the second copy of a brown, known virgin at the 10th century. The worship of the Black Virgin is particularly dedicated to the expectant mothers. The original stolen at the 14th century and was first of all reproduced with the identical one.

The enthusiasm of faithful was such as the armies of candles transformed the Couleur second exposed virgin. Thus, as of the 16th century, Notre-Dame the Brown one was known under the name of Notre-Dame the Black one. This statue has, says one, of many miracles to its credit. In particular, it would have saved the Saint-Michel district of a fire in 1672.

The statue was burned with the favor of the revolution, in 1799, on the Place of the Capitole. In 1807, a new statue was carved according to the memories which one had of the former burned virgin.
