History
-
Based is a city of North in charge of an animated long story whose origins, very old, are badly known, if it is not through more or less acceptable assumptions. According to the etymology Celtique, Based " would mean; Basse" ground; , however the city is located in a not very broken plain. An old tradition, this time, would like that the formerly important city, would have been so reduced by misfortunes and the Guerre that it would have been called " Abaissée" , but no proof can support this version, probably resulting from the many wars which the city underwent. Lastly, according to Tite- Live, Based would have been the old residence of Low: “Bassorum Oppidum”.
-
the Historian Martin Lhermite, in his work “ History of the saints of the province of Lille ”, teaches us that Based received, in the year 390, the pastoral visit of Saint Diogène, first bishop of Arras. It fulfilled its mission of evangelization of the grounds of Flanders, still pagan. About the year 430, the Francs made irruption in the Gaulle S and drove back the Romans after bloody combat which would have taken place on the territories of Illies, Marquillies and Lorgies. Nothing history seems to be collected on the area basséenne under the kings of the first franque generation. We know that then the country was almost entirely covered with wood, was infested wolf S and of a crowd of criminals who took refuge there to ensure their impunity.
-
After Saint-Vaast towards 510 and Saint Dominique in 555, Holy Amand, founder of the Abbey of Marchiennes, there preached the Évangile.
-
After Charlemagne, the region, with various recoveries, was devastated by the Normands. In 880, Based was put at fire and blood and was reduced to nothing.
-
At the time of the First World War, the city particularly suffered, almost shaven on most of its territory. The after-effects of war remained visible there lasting more than 10 years, before new bombardments in 39-45
