Basècles

Basècles (in Picardy Basèque , in Walloon Båzeke ) is a section of the common Belgian of Belœil, located in Wallonia in the Province of Hainaut.

The village is located at 26,5 km of Mons, 23 km of Tournai, 17 km of Ath, 11km of Leuze-in-Hainaut, 6km of Péruwelz and 3km of Blaton.

It was a common to whole share before the fusion of the communes of 1977.

Etymology

Comes from Latin Basilicas (Derivative of the word basilicae which was small buildings that Francs set up on the tomb of the great men and pointed out the shape of basilicas or buildings crowned); Basècles would thus mean mausoleum.

History

  • the village, just beside the Roman way Dribbled - Cologne, was several times attacked by the French soldiers (1478, 1557-1559, 1649,1709,1712). Excavations organized into 1848 made it possible to find a cemetery Mérovingien of about fifty tombs.

Folklore

  • the carnival of Basècles, created in 1981, by gay dogs training the brotherhood of Crocheux basèclois, in order to revive the local sport " the Crossage ". Currently, the festivities proceed over several weeks " the samedi" who follow themselves:

  1. soumonces out of battery: under the bearings of the drums and large case the crocheux basèclois will announce the carnavalesque beginning of festivity, in the buildings of different the brotherhood.

  2. soumonces in music: all the brotherhoods, divided into 4 musical groups, disperse with the 4 corners of the village to announce the festivities with the inhabitants.
  3. the ball of the soumonces.
  4. " Friday, day before Saturday gras" has place, the opening ceremony of the carnival, with the baptism of the giants and grand opening, the whole animated by several brass bands.
  5. fatty saturdays " precedent Tuesday gras" , towards 14:00, the large carnavalesque procession takes place gathering a score of brotherhoods local, representing trades of the village or purely folk, is accompanied by tanks and/or giants (9 giants and two famous persons) and is animated by ten brass bands. The evening, towards 22:00, large final rondo with fireworks.
  6. Ash Wednesday, crossage in street, where all the brotherhoods in costume take part.
