Bar-le-Duc
Bar-le-Duc is a common French, located in the department of the Meuse and the area Lorraine.
Its inhabitants is called the Barisiens .
However, with the image of what was the name of the soil formerly, one could also legitimately call them Barrois .
Geography
Situation
Bar-le-Duc is a town of intermediate size, located in the North-East of the France, it is the chief town of the department of the Meuse.
Accessibility with the transport infrastructures tends to change. Served initially well by Paris-Strasbourg the service roads rarefy, to supplement with those of the Station Meuse TGV (Paris in 58 min) to 25 km. On the other hand, the access to the great road ways is facilitated by the setting in 2x2 ways of the RN135, bond between the city-prefecture and the way express RN4.
The city is thus located in the middle of the Barrois.
The city is located on the edges of the Ornain and develops on the slopes of the valley. The city can thus be divided into three parts:
- on the side of left bank (thus in south-west), one finds the city high, “historical” district of the city,
- with the accesses of the Ornain, the low city,
- on the side Right Bank (north-eastern), the Coast Holy-Catherine, which was recently occupied (years 1960).
History
The first human traces of occupation go back to the Gallo-Roman surface. Various lucky finds were made on the territory of the commune, around current Rue of the Romans (along the Channel). The city bore the name of Caturiges. It is in addition made by it mention on the Table of Peutinger.It seems however that the city really started to develop only starting from the Early middle ages, with the construction of a castle.
Baptized Bar-le-Duc in reference to the duke of Bar, it is capital county then duchy of Bar (when he becomes a duchy in 1354). The city takes the name of Bar-on-Ornain during the Revolution.
The counts then dukes of Bar were vassals of king de France since 1301 for left bank of the Meuse. Bar-le-Duc belonged to this territory and its inhabitants benefitted from it to call upon the Parlement of Paris at the time of various litigations.
In 1419 the treaty of Foug envisages the marriage of the heir to the duke of Bar with the heiress of the duke of Lorraine. From now on the two countries, while keeping their identity, will have the same sovereign who will carry the title of " Duke of Lorraine and of Bar".
Charles IX passes in the city at the time of royal sound Tour de France (1564 - 1566), accompanied by the Cour and Large by the kingdom: his/her brother the duke of Anjou, Henri de Navarre, cardinal of Bourbon and Lorraine. The city belongs then to the Guise which should be allured.
The February 21st 1604, the Parlement of Paris hands down a judgment to the profit of the inhabitants of the low cities and suburbs of Bar and borough of Longeville, which made call of a decision of the duke of Lorraine and Bar Charles III about the imposition of certain taxes, which had been decided by an assembly of the clergy and the nobility to which the third-state had not been convened.
July 26th 1789, crowd massacres the merchant of grains Pélicier, rich person notable of the city, at the time of a riot of subsistence.
At the conclusion of the wars of the Revolution, united occupy the town of 1815 with 1818 (treated of Aachen).

Bar-le-Duc is the seat of the Chamber of commerce and industry of the Meuse. It manages the aerodrome of Rozelier.

The surroundings of Bar-le-Duc joined in a community of communes, which counts 15 members: Bar-le-Duc , Behonne, Beurey-on-Saulx, Chardogne, Roof-in-Barrois, Fains-Véel, Longeville-in-Barrois, Naive-Rosières, Resson, Robert-Spain, Rumont, Soap-in front of-Bar, Trémont-on-Saulx, Valley-with Ornain and, since January 1st 2004, Vavincourt.
Bar-le-Duc is divided into 2 cantons:
- the Canton of Bar-le-Duc - North is made of part of Bar-le-Duc and communes of Fains-Véel and Longeville-in-Barrois (13 081 inhabitants);
- the Canton of Bar-le-Duc - South is made of part of Bar-le-Duc and communes of Roof-in-Barrois, Robert-Spain, Soap-in front of-Bar and Trémont-on-Saulx (10 206 inhabitants).

- Charles-Maurice Ernest Jacquelot de Moncets (1838-1906), major general.
- Jules Develle (1845-1919), 12 times Minister for IIIe Republic.

Tourist monuments and places
The visitor will undoubtedly begin his tour with the High Ville and his district Renaissance where remained the rich person families of the time. The St-Etienne Church (with the Skeleton, sculpture of Ligier Richier) and the Place St-Pierre (Law courts, old markets…), in the center of this small city, have an unquestionable attraction. You will be able to also benefit from the view-points and the Museum near installed in the last wing to the castle still upright. The Avenue of the castle skirts the old ramparts of the castle whose only one tower (the Heyblot tower) is still upright, to admire the view-point on the college Gilles of Trier (Rebirth). The avenue gives access the low city , which is certainly gravitational (more popular houses) but it shelters the administrative main part of the trade and the buildings like some remarkable monuments: The Notre-Dame bridge, the Notre-Dame church and of splendid houses rebirth street of the Borough.Let us note that in summer, a luminous scenography makes it possible to redécouvrir completely certain monuments at the fallen night: Saint-Etienne church, Prefecture.

The small town has solids associations in the cultural world, like the ACB, which programs spectacles and concerts throughout the year. At the end of June, a Festival animates and emphasizes the old city: RenaissanceS, festival of theater of street, music, artisanal market… A Cinéma, which dares sometimes flirter with the Art and Essai, will open its doors to you. The coffees of any quality will not fail to accommodate you the evening to exchange short counter and gossip in any kind.
At the beginning of July, the gone of the soil and jams accommodates, since 2002, the championship of the world of currant seeding (with the goose feather), heritage of a tradition whose oldest writings go back to 1339.
