Bakchich is a term used to describe at the same time a charitable gift like certain forms of corruption by bribe with the the Middle East and in Asia of South-west.
Origins
The word baksheesh finds its origin in the Persan word bakshish (RTL F بخشش) which means “gift” passed to Arabic (rear RTL بقشيش) baqšīš and with Turkish (bahşiş) “tip; bribe”. Baksheesh is one of the many Persan words which migrated towards the east thanks to the trade and with the empire moghol.
Types of baksheesh
- Charity towards the beggars. Of the Pakistan, the beggars will require alms by saying “bakseesh, baba!”.
- Tip. This does not have any relationship with the Western principle consisting in giving a tip to a waiter. It is rather about a sign of gratitude, respect or veneration. An offering with the gods can be regarded as baksheesh. A to fakir can also require a baksheesh without any thought of begging. Indeed, in the Pakistani world and Moslem the donor of offerings respects the beggar to have enabled him to gain merit.
- Bribe. For example, if a police officer takes to you in red-handed with a Chillum filled of Charas , you will have the choice between going in prison or paying a baksheesh .
European use
This word also migrated towards the west. In Serb, as well as in Bulgarian бакшиш means " pourboire" in its conventional direction.
