Bagnes

Bagnes is a common Suisse of the Canton of Were worth, located in the District of Entremont.

The commune of Bagnes is since always largest of Switzerland with an entire surface of 296 km ² comparable with that of the Canton of Schaffhouse (298 km ²). It thus exceeds the superfice of the cantons of Zoug (238 km ²) and of Geneva (282 km ²). However, this place should to soon be him delighted by Davos, following its next fusion with Wiesen.

With: 6715 inhabitants at January 1st, 2004, to which 1 ' 028 titular people of a residence permit are added L, Bagnes occupies the 7th rank of the Valaisan communes in term of population, immediately after the common-cities of the plain of the Rhone.

The publications devoted to the commune of Bagnes are numerous. A bibliography on the subject, not including/understanding less than 20 writings, was quoted by the Wolf (1965) in its monumental work entitled " Farmer & Pastors valaisans". Since, many books came to be added to this long list.

The surface of the commune of Bagnes is of 296km ², which is divided into:

: 6000 ha of bourgeoisiaux mountain pastures
: 1500 ha of forests bourgeoisiales
: 19000 ha of unproductive territories

Situation

Sprinkled by Dranse de Bagnes the directed valley the south-eastern North-West, opens close to Sembrancher to the confluence of Dranse de Bagnes and Dranse d' Entremont. From there, Dranse runs to throw in the the Rhone with the elbow of Martigny, located 15km pls downstream. The majority of the villages are located, either in the content of the valley on the corners of dejection, or on the terraces and projecting ledges of the adret of Right Bank of Dranse, Bruson, with the hamlet of Sappey, is the only village occupying the left side directed in north.
