Azra (group)

Azra was a group of music Rock Yugoslav, very popular in old the Yugoslavia. It was formed in 1977 with Zagreb (Croatia) by Branimir Štulić. Its name comes from worms - " Ja zovem El Muhamed, Iz plemena starih Azra " (" My name is El Muhamed, of the tribue old Azra ") - Sevdalinka " Kraj tanahna šadrvana" , which is a translation of the song " Der Asra" written by Heinrich Heine.

The group appeared, before even taking the name " Azra" , with the quality of its guitarist and his beater. Its first album is appeared in 1979 and it was pointed out with the songs " Balkan" and " With šta da radim". The first album carried out by the group under the name " Azra" , in 1980, had as a title the name of the group. This disc was a business success and it made the group popular in the whole of old Yugoslavia. Azra recorded, in 1987, its last album in studio " Izmedju krajnosti". In 1988, the group recorded a quadruple album live under the title Zadovoljština (Satisfaction), after which Štulić dissolves the group and continued then a career in solo.

Azra was an urban legend: it made concerts and was listened in various districts of the cities. It was among the most popular groups of music and most influential of the Yugoslav New wave and on the scene rock'n'roll in general in Yugoslavia of the Années 1980.

A documentary film carried out in 2003 and entitled Sretno dijete ( happy Enfant , which was the title of a song of the group Prljavo kazalište) depicts Azra like one of the two central figures of the Yugoslav scene rock'n'roll of the years 1980 with the group Bijelo dugme.

Azra remains still a very popular group among the youth of the countries resulting from old Yugoslavia whereas the majority of the other group of the Yugoslav New wave from now on are regarded as forming part, more or less, of the musical history.
