Origin and distribution

It comes from the county of Ayr in Scotland, under a cold and wet climate where it is remarkably adapted. It belongs to the Celtic Rameau. At the 18th century, original black cattle not very productive was crossed with the race " teeswater" (today disappeared and ancestor from the Shorthorn) like with cattle resulting from the Channel Islands. (Jersey and guernesey)
Ses effective decreased with the the United Kingdom under the pressure of the holstein S, but its presence is important in North America and Scandinavia. (Sweden and Finland). It adapted better than the holstein in cold area.
Hors of its area of origin, it was crossed with other races in order to improve its productivity or its adaptation: Red Red holstein or of the Baltic.

Morphology

It wears a red black and white dress (red majority mahogany tree, but the nuances can go from the deer to almost black) and horns in high quadrant. The mucous membranes are pink color flesh.
C' is a race of intermediate size to large. The cow measures 138 cm for 550-600 kg and the bull 145 cm for 850-900 kg. It has udders conformed well and adapted well to the machine milking.

Aptitudes

It is a classified race Lait ière. Its production is interesting, with lactations of 7000 liters, but especially of the butyric and proteinic rate high and optima for the butter and cheese-making production.
