The department of Aveyron was created in 1790 on the layout of the country of the Rouergue. Its first known inhabitants were Rutènes at the time Gallic, but the settlement is much older (first department of France for the number of Dolmen S: more than 1000).

Aveyron belongs to the Région the Midday-Pyrenees. It is bordering on the departments of the Tarn, of Tarn-et-Garonne, the Lot, the Herault, the Gard, the Lozere and the Cantal. The culminating point of the department is the place known as " Cazalets" , culminating with 1.463m, on the Mounts of Aubrac. The department of Aveyron is cut out in several natural areas like the Rougiers.
The department of Aveyron consists of old rock plates of a large geological variety. The rivers - Truyère, Batch, Aveyron and Tarn - there cut deep valleys.
