Avesnes-on-Helpe

Avesnes-on-Helpe is a common French, located in the department of the Northern and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Its currency is " Avesnes is built on the rock which so in goes is' rattrotent".

Geography

Avesnes-on-Helpe gave its name to the area of the Avesnois, characterized by an undulating landscape, Bocage S, Verger S, small villages. Avesnois is crossed by the Helpe Majeure, Avesnes-on-Helpe is on its left bank.

History

  • Avesnes-on-Helpe is founded at the 11th century by Wédric the Bearded one and its Thierry son made constuire the first fortifications of the city.
  • Avesnes is destroyed in 1477 by Louis XI.
  • In 1556, Avesnes is yielded to the Spain. The city becomes again French only one century later, in 1659 with the Traité of the Pyrenees and Vauban strengthens the city.
  • In October 1793, Avesnes is the seat of the staff of Jourdan and Carnot at the time of the Bataille of Wattignies. Napoleon i spent his last night there before the battle of Waterloo (see the current presbytery)
  • At the end of the First World War, of March in September 1918, Hindenburg has its general headquarter with Avesnes. It is from there that it directs the last German operations. The June 15th the Kaiser Guillaume II passes the troops in review on the Town square.
