Aurunces

The Aurunci , like the Latin or the Samnites, are people of Indo-European origin, which one generally locates the installation in Italy towards the beginning of thousand-year-old Ier front J.C. The historical and linguistic studies locate Aurunces, among the Indo-European people, in the line Ombro-osque, separated from the latino-falisque line . Their territory, to the south of that of the Volsques, extended in the area from Rocca Monfina, between the rivers of the Liri and the Volturno, the Aurunci mount and the Massico mount.
The Roman sources describe them like a not very advanced population, mainly installed in villages at the tops of the hills, with character défensif.
The same Roman sources quote Aurunces in reference to the Roman attack carried in -504 and -503 with the Latin colonies of Cora and Pometia, which was allied in Aurunces. Pometia went before the Roman legions do not climb the walls, but that is not enough to save it nor its inhabitants: " In spite of this capitulation, it was not less rigorously treated than if it had been taken by storm: principal Aurunces, without distinction, were struck axe, the other inhabitants sold with the auction, as well as the territory, and it place was shaven " (Tite-Live, delivers II, 16).
The Romans managed to subject Aurunces after long conflicts at the end of the Second war samnite in 313 av. J.C. To more firmly establish their domination on this territory, the Romans destroyed the cities which belonged to Pentapole Aurunce (federation of five cities aurunces made up of Ausona , Minturnae , Sinuessa , Suessa and Vescia ) and founded simultaneously the colony of Suessa Aurunca .
