Auroux (Lozere)

Auroux is a common French, located in the department of the Lozere and the area Languedoc-Roussillon. Its inhabitants is called Aurousiens.

Geography

Auroux is located in the middle of the solid mass of the Margeride, halfway between Langogne and Grandrieu, along Chapeauroux, flows Allier.

The Blasonnement of Auroux is: of mouths with two money swords in saltire, the point in top, surmounted by three gold stars.

Tourist monuments and places

The place of the village kept its market with its enormous granite pillars and its small vault of the Penitent ones. In the center of the place, a granite fountain carries the statue of Notre Dame of the Garonne.

Remarkable buildings and public places

To 3 km, dominating the valley, the castle of Relieve, preserved well, within a beautiful framework of greenery, is partly former to the 13th century, the new one going back to 1860.

To 5 km in north, the castle of Fabrèges, which belongs today to the family De Lamarjorie, dating from the 17th century. One notices his long wall and the elegant vault of 1847 decorated by Viollet the Duke.

Religious buildings

The church of the village dates from the 11th century. Destroyed in 1830, it was rebuilt in 1870.

Famous characters

The scientists Pierre and Marie Curie and their Irene daughter, rented in Auroux a house of holidays and praised its beautiful air.
