Aurigny

Aurigny (in English Alderney , in Auregnais Aoeur' gny ) is one of the Channel Islands. It belongs to the bailliage of Guernesey. It makes 5 km length and 3 broad, which in fact, by its extent, the third island of the Archipel.

The population of the island rises with 2.400 individuals (the Aurignais ). Only the Paroisse of Aurigny is the parish of Sainte Anne. Traditionally the inhabitants are called the rabbits because of many the Garenne S.

The States d' Aurigny , autonomous Parliament of the island, are composed of an elected President and ten members. Aurigny sends two deputy to the States de Guernesey at the time of the debates.

Of 1940 to the May 9th 1945, it was invaded like all the Channel Islands by the German troops. There was a Concentration camp Nazi dependant on Neuengamme.

The language aurignaise, language Norman E, disappeared during the 20th century with death from the last speakers. One finds of them traces in the toponymy.

As a calm and moved back island, Aurigny attracted some residents known, among them the authors H.T. White and Elizabeth Beresford, the commentator of Cricket John Arlott, the cricketer Ian Botham and the actress Julie Andrews.

For a few years Aurigny has drawn from the substantial profits by accommodating Internet sites of online game (casinos, etc), activity which is still seldom authorized in the majority of the countries.
