Geography
The Attic is dominated by five mountainous units, the Ægialée, the Hymette, the Pentélique, the Laurion and the Parnès culminating with 1413 m, which divide the ground into three plains. The principal rivers are the Céphise and the Ilissos. Most of the ground being sprinkled very little, it is appropriate better for the Olive S and the Figue S that with the Blé.
History
Antiquity
In the beginning, the Attic was composed of many communities separated, twelve according to the tradition, at the time of the king Cécrops, which were joined together later in only one Athenian State. This realization allotted to Thésée was in fact a progressive process which probably lasted until seventh century BC
Athens became the capital in spite of the permanence of local honesties, and even during sixth century BC of the aristocratic families still led an independent life to the countryside. It was the Tyran denies Pisistrate and, more still the reforms of Clisthène which broke finally the local bonds and brought the whole of the Attic under a government centralized to Athens.
After these reforms, the Attic is cut out in a hundred dèmes and in parallel, in three great sectors: the city ( astu ), the coast (mésogée) and the interior (paralie). The dèmes are gathered in trittyes which them even are gathered three by three, one of each sector, to constitute a tribe. The Attic thus counts ten tribes:
-
Érechtéis ;
- Pandionis;
- Akamantis;
- Kerropis;
- Aiantis;
- Aigéis;
- Léontis;
- Oineis;
- Hippothontis;
- Antiochis.
