Atrabile

The atrabile , still called melancholy or black bile , is a Liquide Froid and dryness (contrary to the Pituite, cold and wet). This fluid supposed in the Ancient Medicine as being the cause of the Melancholy and the Hypocondrie is hypothétique.
For the old ones, the Physiologie rested on 4 Humeur S:

  • the Blood: coming from the Heart (jovial, cordial character)
  • the Pituite: attached to the Brain (lymphatic character)
  • the yellow bile: coming from the Liver (anxious character)
  • the atrabile: coming from the Spleen (character melancholic person).

Etymology

The atrabile comes from the Latin will atra bilis which means black Bile.
