Atlanta

The town of Atlanta is the capital of the State of the Georgia, in the south-east of the the United States. In 2007, Atlanta is an agglomeration of: 5250000  inhabitants, eleventh of the country. Atlanta is one of rare the large American communes which mainly consists of Afro-américain S. On the other hand, the urban surface remains with white majority.

Geography

According to the Office of the census of the United States, the city has a surface of 343 km ², including 341,2 km ² of grounds and 1,8 km ² of water. Water accounts for 0,51% of entire surface.

The town of Atlanta is in the county of Fulton ansi that on part of the county of DeKalb. The metropolis of Atlanta " Atlanta Metropolitan Area" extends on 21 counties: Pickens, Bartow, Cherokee, Forsyth, Paulding, Cobb, Fulton, Gwinnett, Barrow, Walton, Rockdale, DeKald, Fulton, Douglas, Carroll, Coweta, Fayette, Spalding, Henry, Newton, Spalding.

Demography

In 2005, the population was estimated at: 470688 inhabitants for the city and with: 5249121 inhabitants for all the agglomeration. According to the Office of the census of the United States, about: 250000 people in addition to the inhabitants come to work each day in the city, which makes carry the diurnal population of Atlanta to: 720688 people. It is an increase of almost 60  % compared to the total of the normal population of the city.

Climate

Atlanta is inside the grounds and its climate is close to that of the Australia of South-east. It has a subtropical wet climate (CFA), according to the Classification of Köppen, with generally hot and wet summers and soft winters compared to the remainder of the the United States. The winters are nevertheless more cold and the summers less sprinkled than on the littoral. The annual average temperature is of 16,3 °C and the total of precipitations per annum is of: 1296 Misters.

Transport in Atlanta

The International airport Hartsfield-Jackson, is in the south of the city (to 33 kilometers of the center is 13 minutes of train) and with the intersection of the three county S of Fulton, Dekalb and Clayton. In 2006, with a traffic of 84,8 million passengers, the airport of Atlanta was classified with the first world rank for the traffic of passengers (but with the seventh rank for the international traffic of passengers, its traffic being primarily national because the airport is a hub for the national traffic).

The Métro of Atlanta is managed by the regulating Autorité of the urban transport (MARTA). However, the majority of the inhabitants of the suburbs and Atlanta prefer to use their cars like principal means of transport. This irrefutable fact is perhaps due to the weak taxation of the gasoline of the State of Georgia. That causes many congestions and contributes to the increase in the air pollution of the city.

Three highways inter-states cross the agglomeration: the Interstate 20 goes from the east to the west whereas the Interstate 75 goes from the North-West to south-east, and that the Interstate 85 moves towards south-west starting from the North-East. These three main roads meet with the Downtown Connector where more 340  pass; 000 vehicles per day. The Interstate 285 (also known under the name of “ The Perimeter ”) encircles the city and several of its outskirts of the city.

A small railway station where the trains of the Amtrak stop exists too. The station is located on the line connecting New York to the New-Orleans called Crescent.

History

The ground of the town of Atlanta was yielded to Georgia by the Indians of the tribe of the Creek, in 1821. The city was an important railway center during the American Civil War. Atlanta is one of the rare toponyms of the the United States which is completely invented: in the years 1840, the capacities of the medium of the businesses of the city promoted the name “Atlanta” (according to Western & Atlantic, the principal railway line) to attract more northerner capital. In 1848 the small village of Terminus became Atlanta. Taken in September 1864, on the order of the northerner general William Tecumseh Sherman, the Southerner city is entirely destroyed. Martin Luther King and her son Martin Luther King Jr. there were pastors. The city accommodated the Olympic Games of summer of 1996.

Population

Atlanta accommodated many refugees Afro-Americans of the Cyclone Katrina. The city is also the city where the middle-class and fortunate Afro-Americans is most numerous.

Administration

Atlanta is controlled by a elected Maire and a municipal council. This one is composed of the representatives of the twelve districts of the city. The mayor has the Right to veto on the laws suggested by the council, but this one has the last word if it gains a majority with the two-thirds. The current mayor of Atlanta east Franklin Shirley.

Music

Many artists of Hip-hop come from the scene of Atlanta, like Usher, Lil Jon, T.I, Ludacris, Jermaine Dupri, TLC, Ciara, Ying Yang Twins, Jazze Pha, Young Jeezy, Lil' Scrappy, or Outkast. A movement of hip hop was born besides has Atlanta: the Dirty South. Atlanta is also the cradle again and recent movement hip-hop (and which is not rap), the Crunk (contraction of “ crazy ” and “ drunk ”).

The singer James Joseph Brown died on December 25th, 2006 in Atlanta.

  • Atlanta is the birthplace of Martin Luther King. Several monuments in Atlanta are devoted to him of which its birthplace to the 501 Auburn Avenue, as well as a memorial, Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Changes (Martin Luther King Center, Jr for the social change without violence).

Museums

The High Museum off Art , founded in 1905, is the principal museum of Atlanta in Georgia. Its permanent collections offer 11  000 works with the visteurs; the American collections of XIXe and XXe centuries are particularly rich. The museum exposes 142 works of Louvre in 2006, thanks to an agreement.

The Aquarium of Georgia is largest of the world. Opened in 2005, it adds up 30 million Liter S of water in its basins and shelters more: 120000 animals of 500 different species. The building was built thanks to a donation of 250 million dollars of Bernie Marcus, the founder of Home Deposit It is located at the north of the Centennial Olympic Park , close to the downtown area of Atlanta.

The botanical garden ( Botanical Garden ), located beside the Piedmont park, has greenhouses reproducing the various biotopes of planet: Tropical forest wet, deserted,… Each summer, of the exposures of art are presented there. As 2006, it acted of the exposure of works of the French artist Niki de Saint Phalle.

Events

The town of Atlanta accommodated the Olympic Games of summer of 1996. It also constitutes a great center of conferences and congress: in June 2006, the conference of the American Society off Clinical Oncology (ASCO) was taken place there.

Atlanta accommodated the first Social forum of the United States from June 27th to July 1st, 2007, on the initiative of the Social forum.

Teaching

The public school system is managed by the Atlanta Board off Education , whose superintendant it current Beverly L. Hall is Dr. It gathers 51.000 pupils divided in a total of 85 establishments, 59 elementary schools, 16 colleges, 10 colleges and 7 charter schools .

Atlanta counts more than thirty universities and institutions of higher education of which two appear among the best of the country: the University Emory and the technological Institute of Georgia ( Georgia Institute off Technology , usually Georgia Tech ). Moreover, the university of Atlanta is a historically black establishment joining two faculties which appeared in the movement of the civic rights: Morehouse College (men) and Spelman College (women).
