Athénagoras Ier of Constantinople

Athénagoras Ier (in Greek Αθηναγόρας Α' , born Aristokles Spyrou in Vasilikón, close to Ioánnina, in the area of the Épire in Greece the March 25th 1886 - died with Istanbul the July 7th 1972) was patriarch of Constantinople of November 1st 1948 with the July 7th 1972.

It met the Pape Paul VI with Jerusalem in 1964 (first meeting of the primacies of the Église of Rome and Église of Constantinople since 1439), in Istanbul in 1967, then once again this same year at the time of its visit to the the Vatican. In 1965 the two men agreed on the revocation of the decrees of mutual excommunication of 1054.
