Asunción or Assumption (old alternative), is the Capitale Paraguay, center industrial and cultural of the country, it is the main thing port with factories of Chaussure S, Textile S and Tabac.

The Population was of 501.000 inhabitants (1992). In 2001 it was roughly of 600.000 inhabitants. Its surface metropolitan as for it, called Gran Asunción and including the communes of San Lorenzo, Lambaré, Fernando of Mora, Luque, Mariano Alonso Castling, Ñemby, Elisa Villa and San Antonio, reached an estimative figure of 1.500.000 inhabitants.
Asunción is one of the oldest cities of South America. The site was discovered by Juan de Ayolas, but the city, called Nuestra Señora of Asunción (Our-Lady-in-the Assomption), was founded the August 15th 1537 by Juan de Salazar and Gonzalo de Mendoza. In 1731, an insurrection carried out by Jose de Antequera Castro was there one of the first rebellions against the Spanish colonists . After the War of triple alliance (1865 - 1870), Asunción was occupied by the troops Brazilian until in 1876.

The city shelters the Musée Godoi, the church of Encarnación and the Panteón Nacional inspired of the Invalides to Paris, where many heroes of the nation are buried.The 2004, a supermarket in prey with the flames killed 372 people and wounded some nearly 300. It was the bloodiest accident of the Histoire of Paraguay. Many customers were forced to flee by the windows, because the fire exits were cadenacées on order of the owner of the supermarket to prevent that people do not leave without paying.
