Astromodelism

The astromodelism is the leisure which consists in manufacturing small-scale models of rocket S and, generally, to make them fly. The model maker will especially be interested in the space fused “real”, of which it will carry out the most faithful possible reproductions. The “technician”, as for him, will mainly stick to create and make fly of the rockets.

Of course, it is possible to combine these two activities, reproduction and flights.

History of the astromodelism in France

The ministry for the Interior emitted a circular of the August 7th 1962 prohibiting the realization and the placement of rockets with powder without control, in order to reduce the number of consecutive accidents to the attraction of this activity.

The control of these activities was then entrusted to the National center of space studies, the CNES, then being born. CNES required of National association scientific clubs (ANCS), re-elected in 1969 National association of the aerospace clubs (ANCS) then National association technical sciences youth (ANSTJ), and since 2002 entitled Planet Sciences, to follow these clubs in the development of their projects, to coordinate the national actions and to form organizers.

In 1985, the important development of the aerospace activities of young people who can practice these activities as from 8 years, leads the ministry for the Interior to diffuse a new circular officializing the role of assistance, follow-up and Planet Sciences control near young practitioners of the experimental aerospace activities.

Technologies

The astromodelism makes it possible to implement following technologies:

One will also find in this activity:

  • an experimental step;
  • Of the project management.

Orders of magnitude

Here characteristics of an average rocket:

  • Height: 60 cm

  • Diameter: 3 to 4 cm
  • Mass: 200 grams
  • 1 solid propellent motor
  • 1 stage
  • Altitude reached: 250 m
  • Time of flight: 20 S
  • Maximum speed: 200 km/h

But it is possible to produce quite different rockets:

  • Height: 15 cm with 1 m 50

  • Diameter: 1 to 8 cm
  • Mass: 20 grams with 1 kg
  • 1 to 4,5… driving
  • 1 on 3 floors
  • Altitude reached: 25 to 800 m
  • Time of flight: 0 to 1 mn
  • Maximum speed: 300 to 400 km/h

It is of course completely possible to build and make fly of the rockets to the quite different characteristics; they are there only orders of magnitude.
