Biography
She studies near her mother, then with New York, where she bores on December 6th 1941 (Attaque day before on Pearl Harbor) with the Metropolitan Opera to replace last minute of Lotte Lehmann in the role of Sieglinde in the Valkyrie of Richard Wagner. December 12th, she repeats and replaces with the foot raised Helen Traubel in the role of Brünnhilde in Siegfried. Installed in Germany, where it becomes a pillar of the “Nouveau Bayreuth” as of 1951, it marries Hermann Weigert, repeater of the Philharmonic orchestra of Berlin. Its career lasts until 1995; since 1972, it sang in the register of Mezzo-soprano. Astrid Varnay lived with Munich and taught with Düsseldorf.
Its voice
Astrid Varnay was equipped with a voice as exceptionally powerful and enduring as her contemporary compatriot and exact Birgit Nilsson, and the two women often crossed, in particular with Bayreuth, where one and the other was unforgettable Brunehildes. With the play of the direct comparison (for example in the role of Elektra), the voice of Astrid Varnay seems more cordial, less smooth than that of its rival and néanmois friendly, more expressive, though less perfect on the level of diction and the articulation.
