Assab

Assab (or Aseb ) is a port of Érythrée located on the west coast of the Red Sea. In 2006, the population is of 74,405 inhabitants whereas in 1989, it was of 39,000. Assab has a Raffinerie Pétrole providing the local markets and the Ethiopia. Meadows of this site is the ancient city of Arsinoé.

In 1869, the territory is bought with the local Sultan by the Società di Navigazione Rubattino and is acquired by the Italy in 1882 which, considering the port unsatisfactory with the exploitation of the interior grounds, in fact a stock room of the coming coal or in order to be placed in ships. The Soviet Union built there later an oil refinery. Assab is the principal port of Erythrée to the XXe century. During the Civil war and the Famine of the Years 1980, the food aid in Erythrée and the province Ethiopia of Tigré passes by this port.

The harbor installations were extended considerably and developed with the beginning of the Années 1990, with the construction of new a final, but the port currently knows a phase of decline following the conflict Érythrée-Ethiopia which causes the stop of the Commerce between the two Nation S. Assab is also known for its important Marché, its Plage S, its night life and its Aéroport.
