Artois

The Artois is a historical province of France of the Ancien Mode, having for capital Arras, and which forms today most of the Pas-de-Calais. The inhabitants of Artois are Artesian .

History

Contours of Artois varied during the Siècle S, according to the risks of the history and of fastenings or separations of with the close counties, Comté of Boulogne, Comté of Flanders, etc

Artois corresponds about to the country of the Gallic tribe , undoubtedly of Germanic origin , the Atrebates, whose capital Nemetocenna became Arras. Included/understood by the Romans in the Roman Province of Belgium, this country was conquered at the 5th century by the Francs and given into 863 by Charles the Bald person to Judith, her daughter, who married Baudouin Arm wrestling, count de Flandre.

After havebeing had a long time by the counts of Flanders, under the suzerainty of France, it was joined together with the crown by Philippe-Auguste in 1180, and was given in 1237, with title of county, by Saint Louis with Robert, his puîné brother: to see County of Artois .

After having belonged to the duke of Burgundy, Artois passed by heritage to Habsbourg of Spain and was attached definitively to France after the Guerre Thirty Year old, on November 7th 1659 under the terms of the Traité of the Pyrenees.

Current Artois

In its modern direction, Artois corresponds to the territory defined by the various poles of the Université of the same name, created in 1992 whose seat is located at Arras:

During more than one century, the life in Artois was turned towards the exploitation of the coal. There remain about it spoil heaps, rests and museums.

Red Bowels

Thus one calls the inhabitants of the Pas-de-calais or, more precisely, of Artois.

There is no official version with name " Rouges" bowels; , the three semi-official versions most current are in connection with the " histoires" following:

  • the Artesian soldiers carried a red belt of fabric and this nickname would have been given to them by the Picardy ones as from the 16th century. Others say that they was the seasonal workers of the harvests which carried this red belt,

  • the temperament boiling of Artesian, and

  • the return of Artois in 1659 to the crown of France, it preserved its privileges and has thus escaped with the unpopular tax of gabelle which is the tax on salt. Salt not being thus expensive in Artois, its consumption was more abundant there than in our neighbors the Picardy ones who jealous of this privilege said " I minge' T tellemint of, that i' N does not have leu bowels rouches like un' N peak ed' turkey " !
