When the Arménie became Christian, and when she invented her own alphabet - towards 405 -, the Armenian literature started to develop. To the 5th century, this literature was presented in the form of historiography: Moïse of Khorène, of which we do not know large thing of its life, writes masterly a Histoire of Arménie , reporting the history of its country until its time; its work is a mixture of history and legends like that of Haïk. In parallel, Aghatange written to him also a History of Arménie . During the Early middle ages in general, the Armenian literature are known little, and we do not have almost any book of this time. But, starting from the end of the 10th century, the novels, and more particularly poetry, develop considerably. Certain poets enjoy a great fame, of which Gregoire de Narek (Krikor Narekatsi in Armenian). We will have surely guessed it, all these epistolary writings are monks or influenced by the religion.

The literature in Arménie is, during the Renaissance and of 18th and 18th centuries, not very abundant.

During the 19th century, a kind of “Armenian literary revolution occurs” whose Raffi (Hakob Mélik Hakobian of its true name) is the principal representative. The novels are not any more resembling Apologétique S or Panégyrique S; the authors use the Armenian running, and their stories are more “free” (the authors are most of the time intellectual Libre-penseur). Especially, the Armenian novels are in great number at that time. They are modernized considerably.

Currently, the Armenian literature - or of the diaspora - is rather abundant and of a rather modern style (as well as poetry).
