History

Arlon divides with Tournai and Tongres the statute of older town of Belgium. The borough was born with the crossing from the transportation routes between Rheims, Trier and Cologne. The Celts were established there. Its name at the time Roman was Orolaunum Vicus. Many vestiges of the Roman occupation (Ier century after J. - C.) were also released by the excavations.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Arlon is subject to the mérovingienne influence. A necropolis of tombs of the " type; princières" delivered a movable rich person, who allows to think that a princely family, probably belonging to the entourage of the frank kings, had settled in Arlon. It is probably at the end of the period mérovingienne that was set up the first Saint Martin's day church of Arlon, just beside the old Roman Thermal baths, in the building which had acceuilli earlier the tombs mérovingiennes a few decades.

With the Middle Ages, the borough is transformed into fortified town. The counts of Arlon became with Waléran Ier count, then dukes of Limbourg. To died from the duke Waléran III in 1226, Arlon passed to his/her son of the second bed Henri V, count de Luxembourg, and was attached to the county of Luxembourg.

The city shelters an archaeological museum rich in Gallo-Roman vestiges (the concise collection is richest of Belgium) and in vestiges mérovingiens, and the Gaspar Museum, more centered on the history of the regional art, which is also the seat of the archaeological Institute of Luxembourg as well as its library.

During the wars of the French revolution, this place strengthened was the object of engagements in 1793 and in 1794

Armorial bearings

Blasonnement: burelé of money and azure, with the lion of mouths, the tail fourchue, crowned of gold. These armorial bearings are derived from those of the counts de Luxembourg, whose Arlon was a possession since the middle of the 13th century. Since 1848, the claws of the lion are same color that its body, in order to distinguish the weapons from the town of that of the Grand-duché of Luxembourg.

Languages

In addition to the Belgian official languages, the endogenous regional languages practiced in the area are the Lorrain, and the Luxembourg.

The Lorraine one is spoken in France; Luxemburgish, in his various methods, is of use in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and his communes bordering in Belgium, whereas it practically disappeared in France.
