Argos (in Greek old Ἄργος ) Cité of the Peloponnese is a Greek , located close to Nafplio. Its name comes from the Greek root arg- , which means “something of brilliance” (cf argyros meaning “money”). The area of Argos is still ajourd' today called the Argolide.
Mythology
The city has as a mythical founder Argos, wire of Zeus. The city is also associated with the legend of Io, Danaos, Persée like with the epic of the Atrides.
Homère mentions in its epopee S the “Argos pelasgic”, which indicates the plains of Thessalie, as well as the “Argos Achaean”, expression which recovers as well the Peloponnese as a whole as the town of Argos strictly speaking. At the sides of Tirynthe or of Épidaure, Argos takes share with the Trojan War under the command of Diomède. It is also quoted as being one of the expensive cities with Héra.
History
At the end of the Bronze Age, Argos is one of the centers and one of principal place-strong of the Civilization mycénienne. However, the name pre-Greek of sound acropolis, Larissa , suggests that the site was occupied before by the Pélasges. The site of Argos was, with Mycènes and Tirynthe, occupied very early for its geographical site and its position in the fertile plains of Argolide.
After the obscure Centuries, it finds its importance under the reign of the Tyran Phidon: it subjects the cities péloponnésiennes. It is eclipsed by Sparte as from sixth century BC This competition explains why Argos systematically adopts a party anti Laconie N during the Peloponnesian War, either which it remains neutral, or that it is combined with Athens. At the 12th century, a Forteresse is built at the top of the acropolis and is called Kastro Larissa . Argos is in turn occupied by the Francs then by the Vénitiens until in 1463. In fact then the Othoman control the city until in 1686, date on which it is taken again by the Venetian ones, before falling down under Othoman domination in 1716 and this until the Guerre of Greek independence in 1821.
It currently remains of many ruins of the city and Argos is from now on a tourist center popular. Argos saw also Agriculture in the valley as above the city where extend from the plantations of Agrume S.
Archeology
The excavations of Argos made it possible to put at the day of the walls mycéniennes, the vestiges of temples of Apollon Python and Athéna as well as theater. The tombs also delivered an abundant ceramic quantity of of the geometrical Period.
