Argonne

Geography

Argonne is characterized by a relief of Cuesta developed by the outcrop of the Gaize (sandstone Glauconie ux with spicules of sponges cemented by Opale) of the stage Albien (Crétacé). This moderated relief, to approximately of 350 m, presents an escarpment towards the East. Of extension coarsely North-South, it is located between the Massif inhabitant of the Ardennes at North, the wet Champagne (and high valley of the Aisne) in the West, the plates of the Barrois (and the valley of the Surface) in the East.

The topography of Argonne forms a punctuated natural bastion of 5 passages: Chesne, Cross-with-Wood, Grandpré, Lachalade and Islettes. This relief was worth to him to play an important strategic part at the time of many conflicts: in particular the First World War and the Battle of Valmy.

History

It is with the famous Moulin of Valmy, on September 20th 1792, that the revolutionary army under the orders of Dumouriez and Kellermann stopped the invasion austro-Prussian, ordered by the Duc of Brunswick.

Tourism

Today, its reception facilities (rural Lodgings, Inns, Camp-site…) allow the visitors seeking the calm one and nature to pass a pleasant stay. Its undulating landscapes, its forests and its rich person inheritance of the 16th century and 17th century (castles and abbeys) make a gravitational tourist area of it.

To see in the area

the forest of Argonne: along the road of the High-Ride, one finds many vestiges dating from the First World War: in particular Shelters of the Kronprinz and Kaisertunnel;
the argonnaises abbeys: Lachalade, Beaulieu, Moiremont, Montfaucon and Châtrices.
