Area of General Aisén LED Carlos Ibáñez del Campo

The Región de Aisén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo is the 11th area of the Chile. It is surrounded in north by the Región of los Lagos, in the east by the Argentine and in the south by the Región de Magallanes there of Antártica Chilena.

This area is subdivided in two quite distinct parts. The zone continental, coupled with the Andes cordillera and very torn with the multiple fjords. The other zone is strewn with islands which form an accessible labyrinth only by boat.

Climate

The climate is generally cold and very rainy. Pluviometry reaches at certain places 3  000  mm per year.

The area of the islands, vis-a-vis the ocean Pacifique is swept by the winds all the year.

The interior, more protected, has a weaker pluviometry, but the winters are very hard there, with temperatures largely in lower part of 0°C and very abundant snows. Part of this area faces the Argentinian Patagonie where the pluviometry is very weak, but where the temperatures can be very low in winter and contrary being very high in summer (typical continental climate). This difference on small scales is explained by the presence of the Andes cordillera which in spite of its relatively low altitude (2000  m to the maximum) made office of insuperable barrier for the clouds come from the ocean.

History

This little populated area is still in phase of colonization , term used by the government. Indeed, until half of the XXe century, the only inhabited areas were those of Coihaique, Cochrane and Chile Chico. Taking into account the difficulty of access (boat since Puerto Montt, by terrestrial way from Argentina or in plane) and of its climate, only those which are transfered to offer grounds to be shown a profit came to settle.

The area of the islands was before populated Indians now missing. Alcohol, the prostitution and the diseases decimated them.

Under the government of Augusto Pinochet, a road, the Southern Carretera supposed to link the region to the north of the country, was built through the forests. This road allowed and allows still the very abroad appreciated invaluable wood extraction. Nevertheless, the major part of the area is currently protected and transformed into national parks.

Chile and Argentina also have since more than one century several litigations concerning the layout of the borders. Taking into account the very parcelled out relief and glaciers, to draw an exact layout proves to be difficult. It was necessary to ask an international mediation to settle these disagreements.

Economy

The area draws some resources from the extraction of wood. Agriculture is very limited, the area must import to it quasi totality of its consumption since north. On the other hand, the breeding of pigs, bovines, etc, is very important. Fishing developed well these last decades.
