History

Begun in 1866, the building was completed in 1889 on financings of the Greek State, archaeological Company and patrons. The initial plans were drawn by the architect Ludwig Lange then modified by Panages Kalkos, Harmodios Vlachos and Ernst Ziller. The building is supplemented at the beginning of the 20th century by a new wing and in 1939 by a building of two stages. During the Second world war, most of the collections was moved or buried to avoid plunderings.

The museum was closed for restoration, in preparation of the Olympic Games of summer of 2004. It is again open.
