The hexane, or n-hexane , is a Hydrocarbure saturated with the family of the Alcane S of formula C6H14.

The prefix hex- indicates that the hexane has a carbonaceous chain of 6 aligned carbons.

There exists in 5 forms Isomère S. the plane developed formula is given only for the structure of n-hexane.

Use and warning statement

The hexane is a Solvant used in organic chemistry (in particular for the reactions and the Extraction S). It is important to comply with the safety regulations relating to this compound because of its Toxicité.

This one appears by the formation of a metabolite, the 2,5-hexanedione, a carbonyl compound di- , which accumulates in the central nervous system and which is very toxic. This last can be proportioned in the urines to detect a possible intoxication.

The hexane is consequently usually replaced by the Cyclohexane, in particular for the préparative Chromatographie. If the use of hexane is preferred, it is advisable to be protected effectively, in particular thanks to range hoods.
