Macaws , Araks , Arax , Araxes , Araxe or Araz (Persan: ارس, Armenian: Արաքս, Azeri: Araz), is a river taking its source in Anatolia (Turkey), running along the border between the Turkey and the Arménie, of the border between the Iran and the Arménie, then along the border Azerbaïdjan - Iran, entering finally in Azerbaïdjan and throwing themselves in the Koura. Its overall length is approximately 950 km.

Macaws was selected like line of border between the Perse and the Russia with the Traité of Golestan in 1813 by which all the part in north of this river was separated from Iran and was annexed in Russia. Iran and the Soviet Union later built a stopping jointly on the river in the area of Poldasht.

The hellenized form Araxes is found in the name of the culture Koura-Araxes, prehistoric people which opened out in the valleys of Koura and the Macaws.

However, it is often the the Volga which is called Araxes , particularly in the first chapter of the Enquêtes of Hérodote. It is the river where the Massagètes vaincurent Cyrus II.

For other sources, the Aras river was associated with the named not-identified river Guihôn, one of the 4 arms of the river coming from Éden.

In the Antiquité, Araks was especially known by its impetuosity, which made say to Virgile:

Pontem indignatus Araxes (In., VIII, 728).
