Arancou is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.
Its Basque name is Erango .

The commune is crossed by an affluent of the Bidouze, the brook the Lauhirasse, and a tributary of the Gave of Pau, the brook the Baniou.

Toponymy

The toponym Arancou appears in the forms Arancoey ), and Aranco (1584, alienations of the diocese of Dax). It comes from arangoien , valley top.

History

January 1st, 1973, the three communes of Arancou, Bergouey and Viellenave-on-Bidouze amalgamated. November 15th, 1977, Arancou became again independent whereas Bergouey and Viellenave remained associated.

The activity is mainly agricole.
A limestone quarry remains on the commune. It fed until 1993 the cement factory of Cements of Adour located at Boucau, by barges descending Bidouze then Adour.
