Aran (river)
See also: Aran, Merry
The Aran (E), out of Basque Harana , also called Merry , is a Rivière Basque Country French (Yrénées-Atlantiques).
Aran comes from the Basque Haran (a) (it) valley (cf Val of Aran). The loss of the H is typical gasconisation of the name. One will hold his nickname of Joyeuse to the affluent of the Bidouze.
Geography
Aran (E) is born with the foot from the Baigura to Heraitze (Hélette), circumvents Aintxartea to pass under Atezain .
It collects with Mendionde water coming from Macaye. It walks on with the foot of the Château of Garro, of the old mill of Haltzuia, by Bonloc, then the Country house-Clairence and the Abbey of Belloc to throw itself in the Adour with Urt.
This river with the many meanders joined Adour with the Port locality of Vern. This junction point privileged, in edge of the tow path, sheltered the " Lamagdelaine" building sites;. The names of Galupe, barge and couralin indicated the boats used for transport of the cattle, the stone come from Bidache, or for the mode of displacement of the fishermen of Urt. Not far from the administrative limit between the river and maritime mode, fixed by the Maritime businesses of Bayonne (cf the bridge of Urt on Adour built by G. Eiffel), Aran shelters an ecosystem where côtoient the Brochet as well, the carp, the Sandre, the Anguille that the Plie (or sail needle), the Alose, the Lamproie, the mule and the wolf (bar). One will not forget, in season, the Saumon and the Civelle.
