Aquila
Aquila is a Italian city, chief town of the homonymous province and area of the the Abruzzi (Southern Italy).
Near to the more high summit of the the Apennines, the Gran Sasso, it shelters one of the largest research laboratories of physics of the particles.
History
Founded in 1254 under the name of Aquila, it bears its current name since 1939. It is told that it was founded by the meeting of 99 parishes. A fountain perpetuates this legend (fontana delle 99 cinnamon).Aquila saw the crowning of Pietro di Morrone, become pope under the name of Célestin V, the August 29th 1294. It founded a monastic order which bears its name which had more than twenty establishments in France.
Its body rests since 1517 in a sumptuous tomb in the basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio with the doors of the city, basilica which it had made build in 1286
Mariano d' Abbattegio was governor in 1317.
Aquila was damaged by the earthquakes of 1703 and 1706. It was taken by the French in 1798 and the Austrians in 1815.
