Aqueduct Anio Novus

The Aqueduc Anio Novus ( Aqua Anio Novus ) was started with the emperor Caligula in 38 a. J. - C. and finished under the reign of the emperor Claude in 52 a. J. - C., at the same time as the Aqueduc Claudia, devoted all two on August 1st. The cost of both aqueducts bordered the 350.000.000 sesterces.

In the beginning water was punctured river Anio, located at the East of Rome. It delivered a rather turbid flood because the river of which it collected water crossed grounds cultivated in a fatty ground having by conséquant friable banks with a muddy course and disorder, according to Frontin.

The Aqueduc skirted first of all, like the Aqueduc Marcia and the Aqueduc Claudia, the river of which it collected water. It skirted then the Latin Voie on nearly 10 km and, having the same course as the Aqueduc Claudia, its channel was superimposed on this one on the last 13 kilometers before Rome, arches which reached a 35 meters height (certain arches are still visible today in the Roman countryside).

With its construction, there existed already a Aqueduc bearing the name of Aqueduc of Anio, for this reason this aqueduct names Aqueduc Anio Novus .

It was thus the highest Aqueduc of the city and provided the high parts of Rome like the Aqueduc of Claudia. It borrowed the Major Porte with the Aqueduc Claudia where they crossed the Aqueduc Marcia carrying the channel of the Aqueduc Tepula. The Anio Novus finished on the Esquilin beyond the Gardens of Pallas.

It was one of the longest aqueducts and was that which provided the most water to Rome.

Before the reforms of Frontin, it was used to fill the insufficiencies of the other aqueducts (mixed with water of the Aqueduc Claudia and it was going to enlarge those of the Aqueduc Tepula), and water being unhealthy, made them impure.

To make more limpid and healthier water of the Aqueduct, Trajan used the water of two of the three lakes created by Néron for its villa of Subiaco, lakes located upstream.
