Appaloosa
The Appaloosas are a race of horses selected by the Indiens Pierced-nose Indians, of their true name the Nimi' ipuu (people). They draw their name from the Palouse river close which the tribe lived.
The spots which take shape on their coloured dresses take the most varied forms (dappled, léopardées, frosted, flocculated,…), with the result that each animal is single.
To respect the criteria of the race, the horse must have at least three of the four following characteristics:
- the dress mottled,
- the misers (marblings around the mouth, of the eyes and the genitals),
- the striated shoes,
- the Sclerotic white (around the eye).
It must also measure between 1,42 m and 1,63 m with the garrot. The breast piece is broad, the back runs and the back powerful hand. The hairs are provided little, as well for the mane as for the tail.
Since the middle of the 20th century, very many crossings with horses Quarter Horses and English Pur-sang were carried out. At the beginning of the 21e century few differences (with share differences of dress) exist between Apaloosa, the Quarter Horse S and the Paint Horse S, the three races authorized in the international contests of assembles Western.
In 1997, the race was recognized by the National stud farms French.
