Antwerp ( Antwerpen in Dutch and Antwerp in English) is the capital of the Province of Antwerp and the district of Antwerp. At the beginning of the month of July 2006, Antwerp counted approximately 464.000 inhabitants positioning as larger a common of Belgium. Fusion of the communes and formation of the districts

January 1st, 1983, after fusion, the commune of the time of Antwerp was extended to the seven common peripherals (Berchem, Borgerhout, Deurne, Ekeren, Hoboken, Merksem and Wilrijk). The old peripheral communes now form part of the commune of Antwerp.

The district of Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo belonged already since 1958 to the commune of Antwerp.

There is a great difference on the level of hierarchical management of the entities compared to the other common Belgians: it is managed by the council of the district and the college of the district.

Antwerp organized the Olympic Games of summer of 1920 to the site of the Germinal Beerschot current. The name of the site where the team plays is called " Olympique" stage; in recall of the OJ which the city organized.

During the season 2006-2007, Antwerp has three teams with different divisions: Germinal Beerschot in Jupiler League, Royal Antwerp FC in D2 and the Royal Berchem Sport in D4.

Cycling is flourishing with the Sport hall where one finds a Vélodrome and a new hall of exposure. June 25th, 2006 in sport, they organized here the Belgian championship of cycling and hope to reorganize it.

Economy

Antwerp is the heart of the Industrie Diamant surface with a great number of stores of diamond cutting. In the vicinity, a very large petrochemical factory of BASF is located. The Port of Antwerp is still one of the largest world ports.

" Leien " (Frankrijklei, Italiëlei, Amerikalei, Britselei) are the most important arteries in Antwerp. With the arrival of the North-South axis which make Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Brussels, Mons, France and that of the East-West axis between Cologne and the Belgian side made boxing ring of Antwerp one of the sections of highway of Europe of the west more used which makes it chaotic when it is congested.
