Antigua-and-Barbuda

Antigua-and-Barbuda are a Pays the Antilles; its capital is Saint John' S. This State is composed of two principal islands, the island of Antigua, also known in French under the name of Antigue ( the old woman ) and the island of Barbuda, or Barbude, and of some smaller islands.

History

Siboney lived Antigua and Barbuda since -2400. Then the Arawaks and the the Caribbean arrived. Christophe Colomb unloaded in 1493 there, at the time of its second voyage. They were initially colonized by the Spanish and the French, then by the English. In 1674, Sir Christopher Codrington based the first large sugar plantation on the island of Antigua. The only village of Barbuda bore its name. Codrington and the other owners made bring slaves of the west coast of the Africa.

At the 18th century, English Harbor, on the southern part of Antigua , sheltered a big part of the British fleet, under the command, a time, of the Admiral Nelson. This site boxed and hardly visible broad well, was known as being a " hole with Cyclone " , a sure shelter.

Slavery was abolished in 1834. Contrary to the other British colonies which choose an immediate abolition followed from one period of training, period during which the slaves remain with the service of their former Masters (until 1838), the colonists of Antigues choose immediate abolition without training.

In 1981, Antigua-and-Barbuda became independent and entered to the the Commonwealth. It adhered the June 18th 1981 to the Organization of the States of Caribbean Eastern the (OECO).

Antigua-and-Barbuda is a monarchy of the the Commonwealth, the Head of the State is the queen Elisabeth II the United Kingdom, which is represented with Antigua-and-Barbuda by a general governor. The Executive power is ensured by the Prime Minister, who is also the Chef of the government. The Prime Minister is generally the chief of gaining party of the elections of the Room of the Representatives (17 members), held every five the years. The other room of the Parliament, the Senate, consists of 17 members who are remunerated by the general governor.

Antigua-and-Barbuda is fully member taking part of the Caribbean Community and Common Market it (CARICOM).

The country consists of an archipelago whose Antigua is the largest island, and the most populated. Barbuda, just in the north of Antigua is the other principal island. The islands have a Climat hot and tropical, with pleasant temperatures and constants all the year.

Economy

The Tourisme represents more half of national GDP. The agricultural production is essentially carried out in the two principal islands. It is mainly intended for the interior market. The lack of Water and labor - which prefers to work in tourism and the construction industry, because the wages are higher in these two sectors - limit the development of agriculture.

Every year, around at the end of April at the beginning of May, takes place the Semaine of Antigua (Antigua Sailing week), a international regatta opened with many classes.

Demography

The majority of the population are descendants of the slaves employed in the sugar plantations, but there exist also groups of Europeans, notably British and Portuguese. The official language is the English, but the majority of the autochtones speak a creole Langues, mixture of English, local and unquestionable languages other European languages.

The majority of Antiguans are Christian, the Anglican S (approximately 50%) being the greatest confession.
