Anthony van Diemen
Anthony van Diemen (Culemborg, 1593 – Batavia, April 19th 1645, or Antonius) was general governor of the Dutch establishments in the the Eastern Indies, of 1636 with 1645. It gave its first name to the Tasmanie, at the origin called “Country of van Diemen”.
Biography
Anthony van Diemen is born in Culemborg, with the Netherlands, of Bartholomeus van Diemen and Elisabeth Hoevenaar. In 1616, he becomes merchant and settles with Amsterdam. It engages with the Compagnie Dutchwoman of the Eastern Indies and made veil for Batavia (current the Jakarta), capital of the the Eastern Indies Dutchwomen.Noticed by the governor Jan Pieterszoon Coen, van Diemen is named managing director Commercial in 1626, and member of the Conseil of the Indies. In 1630, he marries Maria van Aels. The following year, it goes back to the Netherlands with the rank of admiral on the Deventer . In 1632 it turns over to Batavia, and in 1635 it is named General governor of the Eastern Indies Dutchwomen, with effect at January 1st, 1636.
During nine years, to its general governor position, Van Diemen successfully manages to reinforce the colony and the trade for the Company Dutchwoman of the Indies. It devotes the essence of its energy to increase the power of the company through Asia. Under its mandate, a Dutch capacity is established in Ceylon (current the Sri Lanka).
Van Diemen is more known for its efforts to encourage the exploration of the southern lands. It names Frans Visscher to plan forwardings. Visscher envisages three roads and in August 1642, van Diemen sends Abel Janszoon Tasman to the research of the southern continent.
In November 1642, Tasman lands on the west coast of current Tasmanie, and follows the southern part until the east of the island. Tsman sends a crew to ground with Blackman Bay, on the peninsula of Tasman, where it plants a flag and meets some of the natives. Believer to have discovered vast extended from ground, Tasman names it “country of van Diemen”, in honor of his patron. The name remains when the British are established there in 1803, and becomes strongly connoted in England because of the hardness of the bagnes in Port Arthur and Macquarie Harbor.
The name becomes so connoted that when the island reaches autonomy in 1855, one of the first decisions of the new legislature is to re-elect the ground in “Tasmanie”. Tasmaniens are named “Vandemoniens” until the end of the century.
Anthony van Diemen dies in April 1645 in Jakarta (then Batavia). The company of the Indies grants a generous pension to its widow, who withdraws herself in the Netherlands. Its name is perpetuated by the point more in north of Tasmanie, the Cape Maria van Diemen, is baptized by Tasman in 1643, and by the Maria Island, with broad of the east coast of Tasmanie.
