Ante (river)

The Ante is a French Rivière which runs in the department of the Marne (51). It is an affluent of the Aisne out of left bank, therefore a tributary of a tributary of the the Seine by Aisne and Oise.

Geography

Ante is born on the territory from the commune of Noirlieu, in the oriental party of the department of the Marne, very close to the sources of the Vière. Like the latter, it adopts from the start the direction of the east. A little later with Givry-in-Argonne, it carries out a quarter of turn in direction of north, orientation which it maintains until the end of its course. It is thrown in the Aisne (left bank) with Châtrices, with a few kilometers upstream of Holy-Menehould.

Affluents

Ante receives water of a series of brooks come from the east, buttresses of Argonne.

Common crossings

Ante bathes the communes of Noirlieu, Saint-Mard-sur-le-Mont, Givry-in-Argonne, Remicourt, Neuville-with-Wood, Old-Dampierre the, Sivry-Ante, Villers-in-Argonne, Elects-Daucourt, Verrières and Châtrices, all localities of the department of the Marne.

Hydrology

Ante is a river fed rather well, a little less however than his neighbors of the area of Argonne. Its flow was observed over one 27 years period (1975-2001), with Châtrices, locality of the department of the Marne located little before its confluence with the Aisne. The catchment area of the river is there of 113 km ² (either almost the totality of this one).

The interannual medium flow or module of the river with Châtrices is of 0,993 m ³ a second.

Ante present of the seasonal fluctuations of flow extremely marked, as very often in the east of France, with high waters of winter-spring carrying the average monthly flow on a level located between 1,36 and 1,92 m ³ a second, from December to April included (with an in January maximum and February), and low waters of summer, June to September included, with a fall of the monthly medium flow up to 0,161 m ³ in August. But these monthly averages are only averages and hide fluctuations much more marked over short periods.

With the low water levels, the VCN3 can fall until 0,021 m ³ a second, that is to say 21 liters a second what can be regarded as rather severe, but normal compared with the other rivers of the area. Let us recall that the VCN3 is the past minimal quantity or minimal flow over three days consecutive.

As for the risings, they can be important taking into account the smallness of the river and its basin. Thus the recorded maximum instantaneous flow was of 14 m ³ a second on February 26th, 1997, while the value maximum day laborer was of 13,1 m ³ a second on December 21st, 1993. The QIX 2 and QIX 5 or calculated flows of biennial and quinquennial rising are worth respectively 9,3 and 13 m ³ a second. The QIX 10 or calculated flow of decennial rising is of 15 m ³ a second, the QIX 20 of 17 m ³ and the QIX 50 of 20 m ³ a second (see note). From where one can note that the risings of February 1997, whose mention was made, were not even of a decennial nature, and thus intended to repeat itself at least every ten years on average.

Ante is well fed by abundant precipitations in the Eastern area of his basin, i.e. the Argonne. The Lame of water past in its catchment area is of 278 millimetres annually, which is certainly lower than the overall average of France, but higher than the average of the totality of the basin of the the Seine (240 millimetres with the estuary). The specific Flow (or Qsp) reached the figure of 8,8 liters a second and per square kilometer of basin.

Curiosities and tourism

  • Givry-in-Argonne: Green station. Forest of Belval with some beautiful ponds like the pond of large Rouillie. Water sports on the pond (bathe, veil, canoeing), fishing.
