Anne Chrétien Louis of HELL was born on August 25th, 1783, in Verneuil in the current department of Yvelines.

It is resulting from an Alsatian family of the area of Mulhouse, originating in Francfort-sur-le-Main and the Old man-Limbourg, established in Alsace since XVIe century. His/her father, the knight François de Hell, was large baillif (agent of the king who were in charge of administrative offices and legal) of Landser before 1789 and anobli little before the French revolution. Member of the provincial assembly of 1787, it took the party of the revolution and was member of the Constituent National Assembly. He however did not escape dead and was guillotine in 1794.

To died of his father, Chrétien of HELL is entrusted by his mother to a friend. To protect it from the dangers of Terror, this last inserts it in the navy; it embarks like foams (marine of less than seventeen years). A few years later, it is made prisoner by English after the seat of Cayes in 1803. Released in 1808 then affected in the State Major de Cherbourg, it gradually climbs many ranks in the navy. It is illustrated in particular by many work of cartography of the coasts of the Mediterranean and becomes Naval principal of Brest of 1830 to 1835. The governorship of the Island Bourbon is entrusted to him of 1838 to 1841. For this period it is named rear-admiral and is confronted with the delicate question of the abolition of slavery about this island.

After his mission in the Indian Ocean, the rear-admiral of HELL exerts during two years the function of maritime police chief of Cherbourg before withdrawing himself in Alsace (Obernai), in the castle of his wife. Anne Chrétien launches out in the policy and becomes appointed and general adviser. He will develop in particular the construction of the railway lines in Alsace. Fact Large Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1846, it dies on October 4th, 1864 with the castle of Oberkirch with Obernai.

Its nephew, the baron Alphonse Balleydier, is a famous historiographer of the Restoration.

Its first marriage inserted it in the upper middle classes from the Dauphine: his first wife is Alexandrine Teisseire, girl of an industrialist and politician Grenoble-native. Maternal side, Alexandrine is the grand-daughter of the banking richissime Claude Périer and niece of Casimir Périer.

The untimely death of Alexandrine brings it to remarier with downward famous family of Oberkirch.

When he married in second and third weddings two of downward Oberkirch, the governor of the Bourbon island was combined with very a noble big family, one of oldest of Alsace, mentioned since 1135. This last, Charles Joseph Chrétien of Hell was named minister on several occasions. When the male representatives of Oberkirch disappeared, Chrétien of Hell added to his name that of the line of his wife and took the title of baron. He occupied until his death the family castle, built at the XVIIe century. With the Middle Ages, one knows that it was a dwelling without grace, flanked in the west of a house on two floors.
