Biography
Actor of Theater during a score of years, he becomes artistic director and realizer of the company the Film of Art rested by the brothers LaffitteIn 1908 to cover the noise of the spectators, André Calmettes has a brilliant idea by asking for its next film a music of accompaniment. One of the first type-setters to arrange a film music is Camille Saint-Saëns for the film the Assassination of the duke of Own way , generally played in “direct” in the room during projection by a pianist. The silent film will take as from this time another dimension because the films will know during the first thirty years, a music of accompaniment, a smooth talker, or even sometimes of synchronizations with actors or singers hidden behind the screen.
In three years, of 1909 with 1912, it makes evolve/move with the screen, in a very theatrical style, already famous actors on the boards: Sarah Bernhardt, Réjane, Mounet-Sully in adaptations of traditional of the literature. In particular William Shakespeare: Hamlet, Macbeth; Charles Dickens: Oliver Twist); Honore de Balzac: Ferragus, the Duchess of Langeais, the Colonel Chabert in collaboration with Henri Pouctal.
From 1913, it is devoted again to the theater and does not appear any more with the cinema but as actor, in particular in Small the Thing of André Hugon.
