Altafjord

The Altafjord is a Fjord north of the Norway, sheltering the town of Alta.

During the Second world war, two of its extensions, the Kåfjord and the Langfjord were used as retirement with two German ships of importance, respectively the Tirpitz and the Scharnhorst , charged to intercept the convoys combined towards the Russia by the Northern Cape. Those were attacked the September 20th 1943 during the Opération Source/Funnel.

In the south-west of the fjord, with the junction with the Kåfjord, is the rupestral Site of art of Alta, world heritage UNESCO.
