Alphonse Nothomb
Alphonse Nothomb (Pétange, July 12th 1817 - Pétange, May 14th 1898) is a Belgian politician . Half-brother of Jean-Baptiste Nothomb (Jean-Baptiste and Alphonse had the same mother and their father was brother; their mother married the father of Alphonse after the death of the father of Jean-Baptiste).
He presents himself on the lists of the liberal party. He takes part in the unionistic ministry of Pierre de Decker as a Minister for Justice (1855 - 1857). He is supposed to represent the liberal opinion there, but its liberalism was very moderate. At the time of the disorders which followed the vote of the “law of the convents” (May - June 1857), it supported with Edouard Mercier the thesis which one did not have to yield to the pressure of the street. After the communal elections of October 1857, which was a defeat for the catholics, he was opposed with Mercier to the resignation of Decker, but could not prevent it. It then took again temporarily the wallet of the Interior which De Decker held (October 14th 1856 - November 3rd 1856), it until the formation of a new government.
He was also member of the Chambre of the representatives and senator. He will be named president of the catholic association of Brussels.
