Alexis Strategopoulos

Alexis Strategopoulos was a Byzantine general. Rather poor under Michel VIII Paleologist, it leaves with the brother the Basileus Jean Paléologue in a forwarding against the Despotat d' Épire, prince de Morée and Manfred {{Ier}} of Sicily. Charged by Jean Paleologist with protecting the lately regained territories, it loses of it nevertheless the majority vis-a-vis the son of the despot of Épire, Nicéphore, and is made capture. It is however released at the end of an agreement between the despot of Épire and Michel VIII.

Alexis Strategopoulos makes a success of nevertheless a brilliant deed which opens a new page of the history of the Byzantine empire. In July 1261, it is sent with 800 men in Europe on the Bulgarian border to make a show of force vis-a-vis the Bulgarian tsar Constantin Tich Asen which prepared to prevent the basileus from recovering Constantinople as well as oserver defenses the Byzantine City. Therefore, Alexis moves towards Constantinople to observe the Imperial City and there he learns that the army of the Latin empire left to attack an island belonging to the empire of Nicée. He thus sends a patrol sent to the front of the walls of the city gets along with the inhabitants who open the doors with the Byzantine general. Alexis Strategopoulos the evening from July 25th to 26th 1261 with the immense privilege to be the first Byzantine to be returned to Constantinople. It continues then its career of general under various fortunes until its death.
