Alajuela

Alajuela is the capital of the province of Alajuela, with the Costa Rica.

Geography

Alajuela is located at the foot of the volcano Poás (2 704 m of altitude). With a population of 47.494 inhabitants (at January 1st 2005), it is the second city of the Costa Rica.

Economy

It is the economic center of the trade of sugar and the coffee in the country.

Transport

It is served by the Aéroport international Juan Santamaría, which also serves San Jose.

History

Alajuela was founded in 1782. In 1823, the city with San Jose republican side, was opposed to Heredia and Cartago, monarchists cities which wished the fastening of the country to the Mexico.
